THE SCOTTISH PROJECT (2020-)

The Scottish Project is my new personal project, where I hand-draw postcards (mosly pen & ink), document them here online, and then mail them to my friends in Scotland, where I grew up. It’s my way of staying in touch with my roots.

The project brings up thoughts of identity, nationality, society, nostalgia, belonging, friendship, memories, nostalgia, connection and of course, Scottishness itself.

Thoughts:

1. I send them a hand-drawn postcard via ordinary, unregistered air mail. The more old school, the better. I realize some of the pieces might get lost or damaged over the Atlantic, but risk is part of the charm.

2. I narrowed the project down to a wee country of only five million, simply because it’s knowable. America, by contrast, is just too damn big. And because so many people there know each other (this is certainly true in the creative fields), it shouldn’t take long for the network effect to hopefully create a fun wee “social object” out of it. The socialbility of an object, of course, is always much more interesting than the object itself.

3. “Scottishness” hasn’t really appeared in the work, at least, not yet. Maybe that will change, or maybe I’ve been away too long. Time will tell.

4. I do occasionally send cards out to people in places other than Scotland- I have a lot of friends everywhere, after all. But the main emphasis will always remain Scottish.

THE MANHATTAN SERIES (1997-2020)

Between 1997 and 2020 I drew thousands of little cartoons on the back of business cards, which I refer to as The Manhattan Series (named after the place where the project got its start). That project is done for now.

NEW POSTCARDS, AUGUST 2020

THE JERUSALEM SERIES, Jan-Feb 2019:

This was the precursor to the Scottish Project, where I moved away from the strict business-card format of The Manhattan Series.
